Classy winery
May 2025 • Couples
Classy winery to visit, excellent customer service on arrival and during our tasting, love their bubbles.
So relaxing next to the fire, gardens are beautiful.

Wanted it to be all amazing —- it was ‘part amazing’ …. Sort of.
Mar 2025 • Couples
This is a tough review because we have so many conflicting thoughts. First and foremost, the lunch at LVN at Bird in Hand was hoped to be something special as we had a gift voucher to contribute to it from beloved family who knew of our strong interest in fine dining - so ideally we wanted to be able to say to them ‘yes it was 100% worth it’. Was it though????
First overarching comment - the chef seemed to be having a love affair with oils. Too many of the dishes were screaming out from underneath a slimy layer! Sometimes we felt sorry for the produce not to be able to shine from under the oily weight. And the oyster to start…. was there any oyster under there??? …. it was killed by too many ‘processes’ and a green swamping blanket!!!
There were high notes during the snacks stage - the wallaby and the asparagus. A big misfire though - the abalone. Always a tough ask. And it was indeed tough!!!!!
The larger dishes were all very good - fish, duck, lamb. No need to go into detail - all were great….. with an amplified GREAT to describe the ‘croissant bread’ that came out with the fish. Wow. The ‘mains’ truly outshone the earlier/smaller dishes.
What interfered with the enjoyment of it all though was the incessant ‘hawk like’ watching and diving of the staff - one of us would quite literally put a piece of cutlery down and someone would swoop in and take it, or a plate, away - often still with one of us mid-course or even-mid mouthful! They haphazardly took away plates and glasses snd anything they could see, and it all felt frenetic.
The birds nest dessert towards the end was gimmicky but terrific - and well portioned too, like all courses for that matter. It didn’t knock us out with a sugar hit but just wrapped things up very cleanly and attractively - a nice fit for Bird in Hand ‘marketing’. Clever.
To finish though….annoyance ….adding $12 for sparking water ‘secretly’ to the bill after we’d paid a fortune to try their higher end wines….they should grow up and make that cost known at the outset when they start pouring the water…..or be real and take the charge off for people who are spending quite a few $$s - how about focus on making your money from amazing cuisine and not through cheeky extras.

A good winery experience

A beautifully upgraded and improved Cellar Door with a range of tasting options and delicious small plate local food. The inside areas are snug and comfortable while the delightfully landscaped gardens offer a number of relaxing areas

Bird in Hand-worth a visit
Oct 2023 • Friends
Great cellar door. Good value at $10 for wine tasting 5 wines though there are two more higher class tastings at $30 and $60. The basic fizz was particularly good. Nice surroundings. Worth a visit

A fantastic experience
Jul 2023 • Friends
Visited for a wine tasting and easily one of the best tastings I’ve experienced in SA. Gabby was amazing - she was incredibly knowledgeable and so friendly!
The new cellar door and the grounds are stunning.
Will definitely be back!

Spectacular grounds. Reasonable wines, Average tasting experience.
Apr 2023 • Friends
The landscaped entrance to this cellar door and the surrounding gardens are quite lovely. So to the barrel room where some tastings are conducted.
There were three different tasting options. First a $10 per person for five wines (non-redeemable), then a $30 per person for five wines from the "Nest Egg" range (redeemable on purchases of wine from the Nest Egg range) and $60 per person for six wines from the Tribute Series (also redeemable on purchases of Tribute series wines).
We went for the $10 tasting (the other tastings work out quite expensive for couples, particularly if visiting a few wineries). Quite surprisingly the tasting was not free for members - have not struck that before. The wines we tasted were quite reasonable but then they weren't the premium selection.
A lovely young lady began our tasting. She was very pleasant and informative and gave us background on the winery and the wines that we were tasting. After the first two wines she was replaced by an older woman who really didn't appear that interested, raced through a very brief description of the wine, didn't really wait for any questions then left us to attend to others . When she eventually returned this process was repeated.
There were cheeses platters available at $40 for a selection of three cheeses from five local and international producers as well as a salmon pate ($14), a smoked eggplant dip ($15) and Olives ($6).
Overall not somewhere we would look to return nor purchase their wines, particularly given the nearby competition.

Beautiful wines and food

We spent over three hours enjoying the wine and food at this winery. There are some exceptional wines and cheeses on offer. The place looked amazing both inside and outside. We were happy to take some wines home and will definitely be back.

An exceptional winery
Mar 2023 • Friends
We had a lovely time at the Bird in Hand winery today. There were seven of us and we had a wine flight. The staff were polite, extremely knowledgeable when telling us about the wines and friendly. We shared a cheese platter and bread and the food was exceptional. The garden shows they care too.

Avoid at all costs

Possibly the most over rated winery in South Australia. Staffed by incompetents. Their wine is in my opinion terrible and their food is worse. Older people are just ignored. If you aren't uploading photos to Insta they don't want to know you.

Hello catrinamther,
We do not have accommodation here on site. As the above mentioned, we are close to Woodside, and not too far from Hahndorf either.
